That said unless you are powering your Tesla off of a solar or other natural energy source how would that stack up? And knowing how Lithium is sourced and transported the process has an impact... Nothing's perfect - some are better than others.

I'm not a specialist in the domain but from what I heard it take more or less the same energy to create diesel than gas. When they heat up the crude oil to separate it the diesel end up lower due to the heavier weight of it. Gasoline range between sg 0.70-0.74, and diesel sg 0.80-0.84. The sulfur level in the diesel is critical. It generally take more care to carry diesel than gasoline due to the sensitivity of the Flash point which is around 60c on diesel versus -40c on gas.
