You dont necessarily need one, unless you have excessive oil consumption. Basically the pressure in the crankcase needs to vent, via the PCV valve and is usually rerouted back into intake system. If your PCV valve/system is not working properly (or not designed well), the oil vapors will settle in your intake system, valves, etc and gunk things up. Too much oil traveling through your intake system, and thus the combustion chamber, means your engine will not run efficiently.

So you put an oil catch can between the PCV valve and the intake to capture that oil.

I'm not really sure how efficient the M5 PCV system is, but I do get a little oily residue in my passenger intake pipes.
