That's not it.
There are two things going on; style and safety.
Big grilles are fashionable. You wouldn't want the car you are marketing to have the smallest
anything.
Designing for safety - not only for the passengers, but for pedestrians, means a larger, more blunt shape up front. Gotta fill up that space with
something.
I didn't like when Audi started with the Edsel grill a few years back - but I'm getting used to the style.
Style grows on you. I actually was not crazy about the current e90 when it came out. Now I love it.
