My guess like others on here is that there probably was a bad batch of oil pumps from a supplier. That's not something you would run into while testing if earlier batches of the oil pumps didn't have the problem.

I disagree on the comment about the testing. Every car should be tested for design flaws. It shouldnt take a ED Customer to get stranded 120 miles outside of Munich and have an engine blow up for this to come to light.
