This looks a lot like the exterior active sound on the i8. BMW hides the active sound speaker inside a fake metal "exhaust tip" (not visible from outside but if you have the car on a lift, look up around the left side of the rear bumper and you'll see it up there). Our guess is this: putting a speaker inside a fake exhaust tip that plays exhaust noises makes it sound more realistic due to the way the sound waves react to that metal tubing, the same way exhaust sound waves react with normal exhaust piping.
