I think it's because M5 is not that special anymore.
When E60 (I know E60 is ugly IMO) came out, it had its exclusive engine, transmission, steering wheel, bodykits, etc.
Now, BMW puts M badges on everything. Even, the steering wheel of M5 shares with 528 M-sport. Despite its power, M5 engine is NOT as exotic as E60 engine which was made in the same facility as BMW F1 engine.
Therefore, some people think msport 550 gives them the same "excitement" as M5 with $20k discount.
