Rationally speaking, the automatic/DCT is superior in a car like the new M5 in almost all driving situations - no doubt about that. However, driving the manual well provides some measure of fun and satisfaction that you don't get with the automatic. It makes driving less boring.
Having said that, it's not easy to decide what to get on a beast like the M5. It does seem that the manual may compromise this highly tuned machine. I'm a big manual transmission fan, but I have this nagging feeling that it makes more sense in a car like the VW GTI or Subaru BRZ than the M5.
