They don't have to do that. They could have incorporated a valve into the exhaust to increase the sound at a push of the button, like the Porsche sport exhaust. Porsche also just introduced the 'Sound Symposer' that routes engine intake sound through the 'A' pillars when the Sport button is pushed. This approach is certainly more expensive, but it's too bad that BMW can't offer this as an option.
