There is much truth in this, however I find that it's plenty fast at low speeds - all you have to do is get the revs up in the lower gears and then just hold on when you hit it. It's a bit like the M3 in that respect, it really comes to life at 4,000 -5,000 rpm's. However it is by no means slow below that. It just transitions from very fast to scary fast. The rolling acceleration in the M5 has made me forget my M3, and I love the luxury. Unless you're a track rat the M5 will probably make you very happy. Clar is right though, it is definitely more dangerous than the M3, you have to respect that power - it's no joke.
