Yes in that case what you heard was probably hyperbole. The law is very clear on this. You can only deny warranty for parts whose reliability can be proven to be compromised by the aftermarket modifications. It cannot void the warranty on a blanket basis which is what your post implies. Their rights in this regard are quite limited contrary to your statement.

The validity of your warranty even in modified vehicles is assured by both the Moss-Magnusson Act and also recent policy statements and actions taken by the FTC.
