To be honest I'm not muscled very much but it does require some strength especially in the fingers.

Basically once you remove all the pins they ask you to remove (including some of the ones on the black plastic trim on the trunk lip), then you need to slip your fingers behind the carpet and pull the carpet out from the rubber gasket. Pull hard. The carpet is pretty rigid but it will flex and it will come out. You don't need to pull it a lot, just enough to be able to access the connectors.
