I finally threw in the towel on android after a neighbor demo'd Apples iphotos app to my wife on their phone and mac. After the wife acceptance factor faded on android I did hang on for a bit but found rooting ios to be helpful in regards to freeing the phone.
Seeing the constellation of automotive diag, coding and tuning apps is ever growing; I may buy an Android tablet w/ 5g to use for all the auto hobby stuff I do. I got outmoded with my escort 9500CI gps/geo tagging app on my iphone which really peeved me. I would like to have access to that live update info again.

Yeah I feel you, now a days android isn't locked into a carrier specific distro anymore. It seems pretty wide open.
Custom os's like lineage os is clean and stock like in terms of reliability and how smooth and flawless it is. Modding is really clean too with magisk manager.
I've used both iOS and Android, and the flexibility of android is just unparalleled and I could never ever move back. The way I see it is with android you control your phone (you can mod the phone and make it do whatever you want) with apple the phone controls you (the phone is restricted to what apple let's you do and there's nothing you can do about it, And the worst part is that it doesn't stop at the software level - it's moving the hardware level where apple forces you to use their certified accessories and this is just ridiculous).
