The discount offer by Lufthansa is really not a big deal and as you said, with my Amex Plat, I could always avail of a free companion ticket (bookings for business or first with Amex Plat Travel Service) plus I have a choice of other airlines not just Lufthansa. The previous buy one (coach) get one free would have been a much better offer.

Also, it would be best for one to shop around as there are consolidated fares offered for first class, business and coach seats and are substantially less compared to what one can get if he/she goes directly to the Airlines. Sometimes going through a travel agent can be better than going to Travelocity, Expidia, etc.
