This is my fourth beemer since 2010. Had the trouble on my 535i and the X5 3.5i and got rid of both those cars with about 47k. I bought the X5 5.0i to replace the X5 in Feb 2013 and the M5 to replace the 535 in May 2013. The X5 just got traded for the Cayenne Turbo S and it had 22k miles on it with absolutely no issues. I was expecting that the V8 engines were going to have less issues with turbos than the inline 6.
On the 535 they changed the software, replaced a turbo, replaced the coils and replaced the injectors in that order all from 22k to 40k. I think the injectors were at about 40k. I never had the 535 need to be towed in, it always made it in under it's own power. Not so with the X5, it had to be trucked in twice. It just got really tiresome having the car in the shop so much and the prospect of owning it without a warranty wasn't appealing.
