You're right, this was true with the E60 M5 because people quickly realized that it was a terrible match with the V10. The 7spd SMGIII was a way better fit but BMW succumbed to the US(only) market demands. With the F10's TT V8 gear selection will be far more forgiving than in the E60's NA high revving engine and the 6spd will work much better in that car.

However, with the E46 M3 the 6MT split was 50/50(SMGII vs 6MT) and it looks like it will be at least 40% MT on the E9x M3's. So there is still plenty of BMW enthusiasts that are serious about keeping the MT alive.
