I think what happens with oiled filters is that people do not follow the instructions and wait times when cleaning and recharging the filter media. (Easy to do) Letting the cleaned air filter dry overnight and then have an appropriate absorption time once re-oiled does doesn't always happen. If a "wet" filter is installed oil from the filter can be carried downstream with intake air charge covering MAP/MAF/temp sensors. Most problems are in vehicles with a hot/cold wire MAF sensor, as the oil can coke on the hot wire and gum and cover the cold wire.

With a daily driver which hopefully most M5's are right??? It is best to keep a regular paper air filter around to be installed while servicing the oiled filter. This gives you enough time to properly clean, dry and absorbs new oil into the filter media.
