The device is sort of irrelevant - iPod/iPhone, USB, CD...is just the storage medium. It all comes down to the quality of the digital encoding. A quality produced CD, or quality encoding such as lossless or 320Kbps is best.

Ripping a CD to the hard drive in the car may actually be pretty lossy - I thought I read somewhere that the songs are ripped at 192Kbps, which is mediocre. Would love to get confirmation on that.

My preference: Use MOG and download your favorite tunes to your phone. MOG supposedly stores local files at 320Kbps...I think it sounds very good and is exceptionally convenient. There are a couple of minor hiccups with iDrive that they'll hopefully work out with software updates, but overall it works extremely well with the car.

Be sure to physically plug the device in - bluetooth audio is not great.
