I taped mine off as a test after removing the snorkels. I taped inside and outside of the airbox to maximize bonding area. After 2 weeks and a couple of WOT runs i checked on the airboxes and both sides had the tape pulled away on one side of the hole. This would initially seem to me the hole is needed to allow enough airflow (maybe not enough) through the cold air side of the airbox.
