Well, there is such a thing, on my e92 with the brembo package at the rear I have had weights on the pad. Maybe that what this was for ?
At the ends of the pads you can clearly see the shiny metal weights sticking out.
When I mounted the brakes the first time I wanted to take them of, but then I thought ..... may be not.
