You should look into the legality of that - I don't think it's legal for them to refuse to refund your deposit in the US. Not sure if it's the same in all states, but at least in some states (like CA), they must allow you to cancel, and they must refund your deposit. Unless you signed some unusual paperwork, you should be fine...
