Going off the main point of the thread here (F10 M5), but I have to disagree with you on the E46/E92 comparison.

Exactly the opposite IMO. The E92 is way quicker than the E46 at moderate revs, so much so that I end up using 1 or 2 gears higher for many situations. The I-6 power/torque characteristics are far more track oriented.

And the V8 is way more refined at the same time.

Maybe the F10 M5 versus E60 M5 change (low end turbo-charged wallop versus high-revs bash the redline) is a more understandable transition, given the different target market
