They clip into a small recess on the brake pad, just as those 'weights' do in your picture. They are sensors for brake wear. Brake wear sensors have been used on BMW's an many other European cars for decades, but not many people seem to know.
Even the 1976 E12 5 Series has them
Most current BMW sensors are 2 phase sensors, allowing the onboard computer to estimate the pad life remaining more accurately.
