EVO has posted a great video review of a preproduction F10 M5 by Chris Harris, filmed in the Swedish winter. If you'll recall, EVO previously posted a bit of a teaser clip and article in which it was confirmed that the new M5 will have at least 555hp (that's the output of the X5 M and X6 M) and that "there's a seven-speed DCT dual clutch transmission with three different shift speeds and a fully automatic mode.

This video gives us a better sense of the visceral experience of the F10 M5, along with some additional reactions by Chris Harris. Here's some cliffs notes on the video, and the video is below for your viewing.

  • M dynamic mode requires countersteering
  • Hopes the production car has a bit more noise because the preproduction car is a bit lacking in noise. But he was assured there will be more noises when the time [production version] comes.
  • Sometimes the twin turbo engine sounds a bit like a flat plane engine, a bit like a Ferrari 355, without the voice boxes.
  • Car has much much broader appeal due to much better fuel economy, bigger fuel tank, and the DCT transmission.
  • The car through its 3 settings for each of the chassis, transmission, and steering, can offer three very different characters.
  • Is it fast? In a word, YES (see his reaction to the acceleration)!
  • Will have more power than the X6M/X5M.
  • Will have class leading performance.
  • IN SUM: Feels like a successor to the E39 M5 and not the E60. That means it's a better all around car.

The F10 M5 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. In the meantime, here's our full coverage on the Concept M5.
