I really like that the car is greener during those times as opposed to idling and adding CO2 and burning unnecessary gasoline. Stoplights can last an eternity; and if I get caught at a train crossing - then I could read a novel. Also I find it quite peaceful.
Tiff at Fifth Gear did a segment on this recently and they found that in a British town (not sure if it was London or another) that the same car with stop-start enabled vs disengaged saved ~15% in fuel. That's a real savings for being green.

I'm pretty sure these systems will be mandated by most governments in the next few years.
You don't need to program it on or off, it's your choice.
