BMW M always claims that it subscribes to no dogmas while considering all possibilities in developing new models. That now includes the possibility of all-wheel-drive M5 and M6 models.

In a recent interview with Motoring, BMW M CEO Dr. Friedrich Nitschke acknowledges that "I've looked at the numbers and 70 to 80 percent of E63 AMGs are all-wheel drive in the US now."

He then confirms that: "On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6." "That’s the timing and it's not practical to react in the current life cycles."

Which M models will potentially see an AWD option? "The M5 and M6, maybe in the next generation they could get AWD, but not with the M3 or M4. Never," says Nitschke.

If you're a RWD fan, fret not, as the BMW CEO confirms that any AWD system would be optional as he understands that most M buyers prefer rear-wheel drive.

There's much to like about this news as it potentially gives owners in wintery climates a AWD option, as well as satisfying owners desiring more traction in dealing with the M5/M6's monstrous power. Yet, there will still be a RWD model for the more traditional lot of us.

The earliest we may see a AWD M model will be 2017-2018, when the next generation M5 and M6 arrive.
