Although I do not care for gas prices, otherwise I would have gotten a Tesla (which I am thinking of getting one, just for city driving), I currently get 19 miles to a gallon just city driving with my 2013 6-speed manual M5. Mixed City/Highway, I get 20-21mpg and pure highway, I get 22mpg. Remember, it is not just the car technology, one also has to know how to drive efficiently and make fully use of Physics, especially momentum.
