Hi Kerry,

If you want the clearest sound, I would say that you want use AIFF encoding on either a CD or your iPod. It's really important that the source encoding is AIFF or there will be degradation. Understand that even if you rip to CD, if the original source was low fi, it will still sound like crap. Once upon a time I was a into music production and sound engineering, so regardless of what others may say about other formats, they all have some degradation unless a true AIFF file. Some will note this as a drawback because of the size of the files, but that's bs, any other format reduce data info, even lossless formatting, and those with an ear for sound can discern the difference. If I can come out this weekend, I'll bring a few reference CDs to test the system...good luck
