BMW also use something called flexray which is some sort of canbus system or addition to the canbus. Getting a standalone ECU to communicate with the flexray and canbus would require a a insane amount of R&D I'm afraid.

Figure it would be complicated but where there is a will there is a way. It sounds like ECU flash tuning is here now or very close. I know John Meaney from Big Stuff 3 runs his own stuff on his F430. If he can figure out how to run a stand alone EFI on the Ferrari I would think its feasible on the M5...not easy but feasible.
