It's absolutely unnecessary with modern motors. In your head, it may seem like neglect, but it'll drive fine and last a long time so long as you don't go buck wild before oil temps get to where it needs to be.
Oh wow. I just read what I wrote. I meant if it's under 50 degrees.

For instance, today was 41 degrees when started it this morning. I waited 5 minutes and then got going. It still took about a minute to settle at 800 RPM but that was being precautious.
