1,200 Mile Service Question
Im picking my M5 up tomorrow in Cali and it currently has ~700 miles on it (from the ED Trip) and Ill be driving back to WA.
Unfortunately since the miles are too low I cant get the 1,200 mile service done yet. Im planning on getting the service done when I get back to Seattle (~2,000 miles on the odo). I prefer to not have to stop for service on the way. -Has anyone here waited that long for the first service? (CA told me it can be done up to 2400 miles). -Am I considered past "break in" once I get past 1,200 miles even if the service hasn't been done? Meaning can I exceed the initial RPM/ Speed Guidance? Thanks

In brake-in service the engine oil and differential oil will be changed and as far as I have heard the different type of oil will be used... even if this is not truth, still those oils must be changed with new oils to prevent future damage to engine/differential or oil consumption... If I were you, I would not drive the car more than 1500 miles before brake-in service...and don't listen to CA or other staff in dealership since they really don't care about cars... their job is to sell and maintain cars... that's it

I was in a very similar situation as you last February. My M5 was at 900 miles and I was driving up to Las Vegas that weekend. Mileage after the trip would be 1,500 miles.
I emailed my service advisor (who I have been with for over 10 years) and told him the situation. He said to get the service done when I return from the trip at 1,500 miles. If you are worried, get something in writing from the dealership that it will be okay to do the service late. What part of Cali are you picking the car up in? Maybe you can schedule a service in Northern Cali if you are picking up in SoCal.

Preciate the feedback.
I'm picking up the car in Socal. I already have a service appointment scheduled at a dealer in the Bay Area. Looks like I'll be keeping it since I'll now be in the Bay Area for the wknd. The GF has decided to keep her plans and fly in from the East Coast (she was concerned about potential flight cancellations due to snow in which case I would've driven straight back to WA). The dealer said the service take 3 to 4 hours which I found odd. Any thoughts there?

I think part of it just allowing that much time. I doubt the actual work takes that much time. But I agree. Do it right and don't rush them. Check the release papers carefully that all inspections and services were completed as required.
Enjoy the ride. |

Thanks again everyone
I was able to get the service done at BMW San Francisco (at ~1,1xx miles). Dropped my car off first thing Saturday while the GF and I toured the city. I start heading back to WA today (perfect timing).

According to tech manual, you should still hold off using launch control until 3000 miles:
Launch Control The launch control allows optimal acceleration when starting-off on a dry surface. During the first 5,000 km/3,000 miles the launch control should not be used. The 2,000 km/1200 mile pre-delivery check must be performed and reset/confirmed with ISTA (do not reset via the instrument panel service function as the launch control is not released). |

I had the 1200 mile service done at 1250 miles. i wrote down the mileage as i checked it in and upon return 2 hours later there was 2 miles on it which was the distance to travel back and forth to the service area...( thats what they told me).... I did tell them not to test drive the car wo my permission and definitely do not let them wash it. God know what they use to dry the exterior with... used towels, etc is a no no ! They changed the oil and trans fluid and said they opened up some restrictions on the computer to release all the power. ( again, thats what they told me, god knows if thats a fact..... i couldn't make heads or tails of the coded explanations on the receipt). good luck |
