So here goes. Oil consumption
I know a lot of guys on here including me have complained about oil consumption.
Now there are guys that have responded in saying their cars are not using oil which is great but it doesn't help members like me who are spending £18 per litre every 900 miles. I've had the car checked and everything is reported as being fine so where now?? I have taken it upon myself to contact a race specialist who deals exclusively with super cars and race set ups. He maintains some amazing vehicles amongst them are 12 F10 M5's Interestingly he has dealt with oil consumption issues whilst maintaining these vehicles. His advice to me which he swears by is that I should conduct an oil change. Replace the 5w/30 oil used by bmw with 0w/40 Mobil 1 high performance oil. The reason for conducting the oil change us it ensure that there is no cross contamination. It would be great to have your comments in order that I may make an informed decision |

Just based on my own experience. I switched from bmw's 5w30 to GC 0w30 and my oil consumption has improved somewhat.
Going from 1 litre/900-1000km to now 1 litre/1200-1300km (best was 1 litre/1500km) |

Mine had gone down by 1/2 on the iDrive indicator by the 1200 mile service (only started burning oil after I started driving harder). I didn't do the hard break in.
Castrol 0-30 used at 1200 mile service - no oil used until ~2500 miles when I decided to drive the car in a spirited fashion for about 1hr (on fully warm engine) - oil indicator started to slow signs of 7/8 but then went back to full a couple of weeks after this. Since about 3000 miles permanently started displaying 7/8 full and has stayed there (now ~4500 miles). So not a direct answer to your 0-40 question, but I'll hazard a guess it'll make some difference, but will not be a miracle cure. Out of interest as both you & mstmsg live in London, do either of you drive predominately in heavy traffic which may be the route cause of the high oil consumption (mine does pretty much motorways miles only)? |

Why not give it a go?
If it's that much of a issue to you, and he has 12, and you trust his judgement somewhat Couldn't harm to give it a shot right

My car stopped burning oil after I switched to 0w-30 Castrol Edge. It was burning a quart every 800 miles.

I've read the opposite. Show me your sources, I'm open to considering it.

Consider this…. BMW recommends Techron. I have used it for years without any issues. Does it clean the fuel system, sure, but why are so many BMW drivers having injector issues? Coincidence, maybe, maybe not. They also recommend top tier gas which I have also used for years without any issues. After extensive testing with a M5/X5 my conclusion is all gas is the same in the US……… Crap! So now I use the cheapest 91/93 gas I can find (+ Archoil). BMW does not recommend Archoil 6200 fuel additive. But after using it and seeing the difference it made in MPG and how it improved the performance of the X5, I am convinced it will deliver on the rest of their claims. IMHO, BMW seems to be cutting costs with their free maintenance, and if I owned the company I would do the same. The products they use and recommend get the job done, but there is better stuff out there. |

Steve Dinan explains why BMW's and other brands burn oil, in the smoking gun radio show @ 26.5 min. He usually has to add one qt to every 1000-2000k Miles. He explains that is due to the sealing ring design, high wear allowance and the by product is more blow by. Low RPM driving will cause more oil usage.
Let this end these threads =). Just top it up and drive it hard.

I don't think @StealthPilot has kept a BMW long enough to need an oil change. LOL.
