In my case, I think it's mostly a case of affluenza, possibly combined with some elements of a midlife crisis. I could get two perfectly fine cars for the price of the M5, the extra capabilities of the M5 are irrelevant on public roads, and I don't go to the racetrack. Also, I know from experience that the joy of owning a shiny expensive new toy dissipates very quickly, and I need my next fix. Basically, no good reason to do it, but I still do it.
Just stay at home, don't even get out and rot away!

Another option is to go with extended rather than full Silverstone to minimize the amount of that color in the car. That's what I ended up doing.

As to ED - I guess I'll never get it - I've been to Europe many times and never felt like I should be driving my new car there (quite the opposite, if anything...) The Welt experience always seemed to me like a pilgrimage to a shrine of consumerism and corporate aggrandizement, overpowering in its ostentatiousness.
Lucky we dont all like the same thing. It looks more luxury than sporty in that combo to me. (especially with a flashy MCB) I had interlagos and silverstone with dark wood on my last E60 and it looked awsome (to me) so am diving in again............

BMW still has not gotten back to me with a date for the ED.

I am hoping they are taking so long because they are trying to get the car done for the 1st. However I have a worrying suspicion, that they are going to screw this entire order up and come back with something ridiculous like an October
proposal.

Yeah I was looking forward to meeting you, BarryB, lawpurv99,e46ArtM3, RPiM5, and many others.

I was very disappointed about this. Especially since they took 4 weeks to process the paperwork, and then said the date needed to moved by 10 days. Pretty poor form on their side.

But at the end of the day, it's important to get the car you want. I will try to intercept Philly-Dee whose delivery date is on 9/15.

Nope. BMW doesn't really care if you keep the order or cancel it.

I will be tuned in to the live updates from the Welt like many of the others. Can't believe I am going to miss out on seeing Chudak18s Sakhir Orange car either.

Why not just stay home, rot away and just wait until ones death!
For me there is the uncertainty of a strange place like Europe. My ED will be my first trip to Europe and knowing myself, I know I won't fully enjoy the vacation when I'm worried about where to park, local driving laws and habits, etc. I can understand when one says they can have better peace of mind if driving around in a rental in a place they just aren't familiar with and I don't think that means you don't want to be "alive". I think someone mentioned "well why get an M5 then" and for me, it's just the way that I am. I get heavily invested in my material items, doesn't matter if i spend $30k or $100k on a car, I'll worry about it just the same.

I for one am doing ED because I do want to visit BMW, and see where my car is born, and I am due for a Europe trip as I have promised my wife one after just going to Hawaii every time we just want to get away. And $6500 in savings is a nice bonus too - I can take that and spend it on the wheels I want since we will be traveling there using miles.

As for the OP - don't sacrifice now, doesn't sound like you want Silverstone leather, get the Platinum. At this price point don't leave anything to regret later on.
