I really enjoy this feature on my M3. I just checked the standard features for my M5 (wherever it is visiting the US today hopefully to arrive at my dealer before they release the 2014 model) and it does say 20 way and "adjustable side support". Here's the link.

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ModelCode=135G

Maybe the dealer will throw in some nice M logo pillows for the "adjustable" part. Then again I'd prolly get charged for "installing" them.

You can bet I will be making a claim to BMW NA on this. I have screenshots of the webpage, and I have also downloaded the PDF ordering guide, so I have my evidence.

I'm planning on bringing this up as well.

I hope the way it is worded in the standard features that the two adjustable parts of the head rest aren't what they are counting in the magic 20 number and referring to as adjustable...

Can't be the 550i has the same useless manual adjustment . No there has to be 2 more ways to go from 18 to 20. Jason can you solve this?

20-way power front M Multi-contour seats with 4-way lumbar support, articulated upper backrest, adjustable thigh support, passenger's-seat memory, and Active Head Restraints with adjustable side support. Includes memory system for driver's and front passenger's seats, steering wheel, and outside mirrors (2 positions)
I think "Active Head Restraints with adjustable side support" means the head restraints have side support. Had they worded something like "20-way power front M Multi-contour seats with... Active Head Restraints, and adjustable side support" you could read the seats have the side restraints.

Very confusing, my first read (and when I ordered) I was thinking the car had the adjustable side supports on the seats, not just on the head.

I read it the same way when I ordered as well...

You are all right....2013 M5 does not have adjustable side blosters....wonder if it has something to do with Airbag standards in US etc. Good News is it does have a 560HP Twin Turbo V8.....

Would have to disagree. They create a more perfect fit for different body types. Not to mention them holding you in place during hard cornering. All my vehicles have had them and I always use them. I have a 2004 Merc that even has it!

My guess this was a mistake on the BMWUSA website. The manual shows it but they were not on my M5 either - executaive package and all. The seats looked to have only been optioned one way for the US market. These are basically the same as the sport seats that are in my 550 M Sport - just a fancier upper back and head rest section - but the same adjustments - 18 way, not 20 way.

Whay they did this in the US spec'd M5 is anyone's guess.

The Canadian website says 18 way. The US one has always said 20-way. So BMW USA over promised and under delivered.

They should offer free retro fits for false advertising when they release them on later year models. (I wish)

Maybe schedule a seat retro and swap the clunking rear springs at the same time?

Picked up M5 just now , had 4 miles on it. No side bolster adjustment and sales manager agreed its only 18 way . Seats are in fact same as my 550i with some small differences in upper back rest configuration . Also unfortunately I believe I have dreaded clunk sound . Noticed it already with only 26 miles now on car . It dies sound like a loose wrench in trunk. Having said all this I am at this stage not overly unhappy . Car is comfortable , not harsh and tire noise is nearly unnoticeable . I have 19 wheels. I will report back in a few days. Let's however work to get a financial resolution on seat mis-representation.

Psst......all companies now a days r nickle n diming bastards.

More power to u for standing up for what u think is wrong but dont have a mini stroke if they pull the ol " we reserve the right to change specs from the website" wildcard.

My suggestion? Live stroke free and enjoy the car when it gets here.

P.s. if ud like me to sit the back seat and hold u in corners i will. I got overexcited with some special order requests on mine and need the money. Yes, it will cost u and no, i am not cheap.

If you have appetite to pursue this, I would start here.

This truly sucks - so US-market 2013 M5 cars have the defective coil springs too...

This really sucks we've had adjustable bolsters on every BMW we've had over the last seven years- M3s, E70 and E90. I can't believe they not only didn't include them but misled us about it too!!!

I think they must have screwed up during production not realizing the error. I'm not purchasing a first model year vehicle ever again. Even the US market car manual shows the buttons for the bolsters!

My bet is the issue is the airbags in the side of the seats.

Maybe but if Chevy can figure out how to do it on a Z06 and Porsche can on a 911 , why can't BMW.

Those of you reading this thread doing ED should at the very least point out the problem when you are taking delivery. Afterall you are at BMW HQ and this is not an inconsequential error.

Wow, that sucks! I never bothered with my side bolsters the first year I had my M3, but the first time I tightened them up and went off for some spirited driving, I fell in love, and I was much faster and more confident at my next track weekend. This does sound like either a production error or a US advertising error. Ordinarily I'd think advertising error, but they clearly exist on non-US cars. On the other hand, production error seems unlikely too since the factory clearly has seats and button panels for the M multi-function seats sans bolsters. It's not like there's a hole in the button panel where the bolster adjusters should be, so it stands to reason that parts for this spec were intentionally developed for SOME purpose.

I don't see why airbags would be the culprit given that a) they exist on the M3, which has side airbags, and b) the bolsters exist on non-US M5s. Unless the side airbags are missing from non-US M5s??
