Oil Use

4350km and the second litre of oil added (in addition to the oil change at 2000km). The first was at about 1700km.

Consistent with the other M5 owners' experience ?

I am at the same mileage, no additional oil used.

I add 1L about every 1200 km. It probably has much to do with your driving style and you and I do push the car relatively often

Running in period is really important; I have same millage / kms on it however no oil consumption

You must be honest to yourself, if you had some high revving in brake in period, you should not look further;
besides this every engine is different, some consume more than others, also depending on the fuel you'll have.

Also do not forget, the oil used during brake in is special oil, that has to be removed!

After the 2000km service I pushed the car almost every time, knowing some of us (m5 owners) are consuming oil, I checked every 500km oil level, it did not changed a bit.

Of course I did rev a few times during the break-in period and I believe it literally makes no difference to oil consumption and but driving style. I'm quite certain people in Netharlands and Belgium can't, and hence don't do participate in 5-10 street races - daily, each lasting 2-10 minutes, 300 km/h rolls and 100+ unique matchups

For some people M5 is a 5 series with power on demand or a status icon, for me it's a race car with everyday practicality and my living dream and that difference in driving style is bound to have a difference in oil consumption to say the least.

I'm more inclined to believe that people who have to top up oil at 1200 km do a fair bit of spirited driving or, for the lack of a better word, street racing. I utilize my car's high-performance capabilities that I paid for and enjoy every minute of driving, sometimes lasting for 6-7 hours looking for 'prey'. It's only a matter of time until the 'civilized world', environmental and safety regulations as well as state laws reach the rest of the world and definition of real driving pleasure and adrenaline is lost in hybrid cars in lonely race tracks.

I still think bikers are crazy people though

Can anyone confirm what type of oil used ?

All along, I thought 10W60 (used by the E90/92/93 M3) is the right type but the other thread suggests it's no longer the case.

The proper oil for the F10 M5 is 5w30 or 0w30 ??

Used to be 10W60, but (as I have discovered through the forum and pushing my service guy to check with BMW) the S63tu uses LL01 rated oil. That is 5W30

See attached photo of what rides around with me in the boot of the car ....

today ... 1000 km and add 1 litre ... totally unexpected since I am still in the break in period. Stopped by my dealer and asked if this is normal and the mechanics said it's within the prescribed factory range and he had seen other M5 coming in to top up between 1000 to 1500 km.

Even my F10 550 did not consume this much oil until I was about 5000 km.

I changed my oil at 2000 kms. That's about it. I'm at 11000kms right now. Everything seems normal. It's all depends on how you drive.

I am collecting my 2013 July build F10M5 this week. Given the generosity of the other members in sharing their experience I will keep some oil in the car in case I get the oil low message.

Can anyone clarify my understanding

1. The correct oil to use is Castrol BMW approved LL-01 5w-30 oil?

2. At the 2000km the break in service the oil is changed. Is the oil in the car for the first 2000km Castrol 5W-30 oil?

Any info would be appreciated!

Cheers

2. At the 2000km the break in service the oil is changed. Is the oil in the car for the first 2000km Castrol 5W-30 oil? It should be. The rear differential fluid is changed as well. The tranny fluid is changed only if you have a manual tranny

Any info would be appreciated!

Cheers
