Exclamation Warning: Use the Cruise Control on the F10 M5 at your own risk

Dudes,

Last weekend my BMW Service Advisor and I went out for dinner and she told me something which I hadn't heard before and haven't experienced yet. She told me that she has had 3 F10 M5's come into her for service where the driver was using their Cruise Control and it basically broke the DCT! She said one customer couldn't get the DCT into any gear and upon further diagnostics and analysis at the dealer, the entire DCT was dead! They had to get a brand new DCT. A different customer also used the Cruise Control but a specific part on the DCT broke and was very expensive and they had to wait 6 weeks for the part to come in from Germany.

I'm just passing this word a long as a fair piece of advice coming from a reputable source. There is no service bulletin about it and I don't know if any other F10 M5 owners have experienced this. I actually used Cruise Control for the very first time last week after I was over 10,000 miles on the M5. Everything was good for me when I used it, but I don't think I am going to use it ever again to be honest. Seems like a risk I just don't want to take given what she told me. Just trying to help the community out.

Cheers,

RPiM5

I don't use cruise control, but that's not good. Did she say if BMWNA will be issuing a service bulletin for this?

WTF? I don't use it myself (really never liked it on any car), but this is not good.

Use it quite often. What on earth could the cruise control 'break' in the DCT hardware wise? Makes little (no) sense to me.

Interesting development. I only have ~3k miles on the car, but during the first 1200 miles used cruise control quite often, and would even shift gears to change RPM while in cruise control as part of the break in process. As of this morning the DCT was still working fine. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but will still use cruise when convenient. I find it a very helpful tool when driving through consistently radar covered portions of road near my home.

When you next eat out with your SA please give us the latest update on the DCT problem!

I've used it loads, without issue.........but hearing this I'm inclined to use it even more whilst still under warranty. Ridiculous if you can't use a feature on the car.

Wow...I used mine for the first time about a week ago (car has a little of 5200 miles now) but I'm afraid to use it again...hopefully someone will confirm this. I really do like my cruise control for any out of town trips...

I use it all the time a plan to keep using it. If it breaks BMW will be fixing it at their expense as well as most likely compensating me yet another chunk of change if it isn't repaired timely.

I, too, have used it on a few trips. No issues here. Seems like a strange issue; maybe a coincidence?

BS. No proof but an SAs word. If the CC beaks the DCT then BMW fixes it. End of story.

I'll echo two comments;

Used it a lot during break in while in Germany (100+ MPH).
My wife uses it far more than I do now.

If it is already damaged from using it, might as well use it more till it is broken and replace under warranty. If BMW wants to prevent that, we need a knowledge/information effort to owners (and quickly).

Exactly - if youve used it and it is a problem, might as well use it and break it so you can get a new DCT that hasnt been already damaged. If BMW were to release something to prevent it from happening, who's to say there hasnt already been damage done to the DCT which may come into play after warranty expires?

A redhead - I think there are some stats about gingers somewhere. I'm sure those can find that out.

When you find out exactly what has 'broken' in the DCT please post it here. Unlike years ago there is probably no mechanical 'linkage' between the ECU and TCU when using the CC, so I for one can't understand why using CC could physically damage a component in the DCT. Perhaps a software corruption necessitating reloading of software, but to have to replace the whole transmission?

On a more serious note - I hope I didn't offend on my previous post. I have used the cruise for some time now - I can't imagine a problem with the DCT connected to this. I am certainly not doubting you on your info.

I previously had a 2011 e90 m3, with 9xxx miles on her. I also used the CC extensively. I never had any problem with that. I understand that different cars, engines, etc, but I never had any issue with the DCT on that car.

However, 3 occurrences would be somewhat of a concern for me. Perhaps it has something to do with the hp/torque figures on the car?????

Sounds like another root cause? I used cruise control from Munich to Austria, and in the states from DTW to ATL no issues. 1200 miles cruising baby!
