Just had 1200 mile break in service - results
Dropped off the beast for it's 1200 mile break in service this morning. Ive had the car for 5 weeks and it had 1240 miles on the odometer. They changed the oil with 5-30. Service advisor said all M5s get the 5-30 grade oil. They also changed the transmission fluid and ran a computer check to make sure all is OK. Everything went well and per my instructions they did not wash the car or take it out for a test drive. But i did notice there was 4 tenths of a mile more on the odometer when i picked it up 2 hours later. Thats the distance from drop off to the service area and back to drop off. I was told they cleared all performance restrictions and the vehicle is ready for full performance. Thats what i wanted to hear! He said i might notice a bit more power after this break in service.... anybody experience that?

Definitely there is no more power, but you feel car is faster because you can redline it (if you didn't sofar because of manual instruction) . The restriction for Launch Control is removed and now you have access to this damn fun feature, but just be careful! Drive safe and enjoy your beast

I have about 3,800 miles in my 2014 and did not feel any increase in power after the 1,200 mile service. I remember a thread pertaining to this a few months ago and I don't believe anything is done to the car to impart more power.
Now, some folks may drive more aggressively! Dave You beat me to the answer M6! |

There's been a ton of posts about this topic. I believe the consensus is that there is NO additional power 'released' at the 1200 break in service.
But who friggin knows.......

Almost certain there was a power increase after the run in service. That said I never redlined the car during the run in period either. Speaking to my BMW technician at the run in, he did mention that on the early M's the run in service was purely to make sure that the cars were running well, but that the new M cars have their power slightly restricted during the run in. Also different oil used during the run in.

I thought they were supposed to replace the oil drain plug too? Or is that other Ms?

There is definitely no increase in power. Like others have mentioned this is a very old topic. There was a consensus a while back that at the most, what there probably is, is some sort of ECU damping to restrict power during the Break-In period, just like owners of the new C7 Z06 are finding out. Also, just be warned that the ECU records how many times the Launch Control has been used and if something were to go wrong with the engine, some dealers have had the propensity to blame whatever went wrong with your car on the prodigious use of Launch Control and blame you for the problem. Some dealers, not all, but it has been known to happen with lame dealerships.

There is no doubt that Launch Control or hard acceleration with DSF OFF will put lots of stress on clutch and transmission, but this is an M car not TOYOTA I have asked my SA several times about the number of times we are allowed to use LC and each time his answer is: Let me figure it out...I will get back to you

Or are you saying the engine still produces the same HP at each specific RPM, but it takes longer to spool up? But wouldn't that also be a reduction? If the engine is de-rated in any way during break in and then you get the full beans after the service, isn't that an increase? Either way, my 15 CP drives like a pig. I wish I never turned in my 13. It's that bad. |

I haven't heard that comparison yet. It's the same drivetrain +15HP, no? Sounds like something may be wrong, as it's hard to believe BMW would BS the numbers or detune later model releases.

Haven't done break in service yet. Only have a couple of hundred miles. Need to reserve final judgment until then.
Never doubting the numbers. Just butt Dyno. |

Or it simply is still a very tight motor. Most engines do perform and rev better with a few miles on them.
