Another Carbon trim install

Nearly finished my DIY install on the M performance carbon trim, just got to decide whether I do the console myself or let the dealer do it.

Very nice indeed!

Your M5 is identical too mine but mine is a '14. I think I might have to go for that carbon too. May I ask where you purchased from?

I've been thinking about getting this trim also. How hard is the center console? Any ideas what is involved?

I got the trim from my local dealership (Lloyd Colne) it was £1900 they wanted £300 to fit it so I thought I'd have a go myself.

You can order it from any BMW dealership.

The centre console is held in place by one screw which is underneath the panel where the lock for the arm rest cubby is, I'm told it's a case of unscrewing that and popping off the trim.

The main issue will be the ashtray/gear lever/idrive/cup holders are all screwed and then wired into the back so I guess I'll have to be patient and remember what wire goes where!

I ordered mine from IND - they suggested that the center console would be tricky and it might be better to have a professional install it. I had the guys at PSI install it for me. Looks fantastic.

Retail was £2150 + £300 fitting, I haggled them down to £1900 for the kit but didn't push too hard so maybe a better price is available.

As for the fitting charge, having done most of it myself there is no way it will take anymore than an hour if done by a dealer tech so try and get the labour down to £150

Good luck!

Good on you for doing this install yourself!! I would've been too concerned with making a hash of the job and causing a ton of rattles in my dashboard. Looks great.

The dash and doors are really simple if can do it anyone can! But I've just admitted defeat with the centre console though, which is annoying.

I released it no problem, then you have 4 connectors to release (ashtray light/idrive/parking brake and gear lever I managed 2 of them (parking brake and gear lever) but the others wouldn't budge and are quite delicate.

So I've just rung the dealership and I'm taking it in to them in the morning, now I know its a 30 minute job (taking care) but they will try and up the time as per usual!

For those looking to DIY the center console I think you might find this very helpful:

This is for the cup holders; though as you can see same step by step process outlined here

Thanks Bottch,

I took the car in this morning to the dealer, they were impressed with what I'd done including the DIY grill install, so much so they did the console section for free! So and big thumbs up for Lloyd BMW.

Having looked at the link provided I had a lot more to do as well so I'm glad I didn't attempt to go any further.

Excellent, just need the steering wheel and shifter to match now.

Do you think it's worth the money?

I'm thinking of getting it for my F 10

I'm contemplating the race display wheel, the blue strip on that one pictured would clash with the interior, the gear shift lever might me over kill though.

Alcantara wheels do feel good in your hands.

CF looks absolutely great against Platinum - its definitely an overall more balanced look. I have had the same thoughts about alu against silverstone but I can't bring myself to spend a couple of grand on some bits of trim (just yet!!)

I hear the point about the cost, what I try to do when buying things for the car is understand what I'll get for them when I change for another car.

I've always managed to sell my exhausts for similar money to the purchase cost, I got some winter wheels and tyres for my 911 and when I moved the car on I got back 60% on them by selling them separately after 3 winters use.

Same with the carbon fibre trim I reckon I'd get close to 50% back on the purchase price when I come to change the car, so it's only costing £950! (man maths is a wonderful thing!)

Agree with you on the re sell for the trim, it will definitely sell to the right person/enthusiast.. As long as your not in a rush to sell that is and/or require the money urgently

Yeah I just meant that I factor the possible re sell into the equation when doing a mod buying something for the car as I change cars quite often I'm on my 5th in as many years.
