Oil consumption
I have read a lot about higher oil consumption on M5s compared to regular 5series BMW.
I have driven my M5 now for 8 months and 19.000 kms (12.000 miles) and have not yet refilled any oil. It's my daily driver so most of the times I behave ;-) No racetrack use. Also the wear on the tires is much lower compared to a previous 530d. So overall the car was the perfect choice.

Good to hear, what year is your car?
And what break procedure did you follow?

It really depends on how much you push the car. I need a bottle every 4k miles

Pre LCI cars would consume copious amounts of oil. They fixed something so I only have to add a quart after 5k or 6k miles now. My 13 was a quart every 900 miles lol.

I picked it up in February in the Welt and stuck to the manual for break in. As I use it as a daily driver in Germany and I generally stick to the rules (more or less) it is driven as any other car would be and when I am on an open road or Autobahn I go fast if traffic allows. Never had the chance to go faster than 292 km/h though. Yet....

Had the same experience. My 14 M5 uses no oil but the 13 was every 800miles.

I had to add two quartz in 6000km, which is 3700 miles or so. Is this normal? I don't drive aggressively, only from time to time i would push the car for a bit. I am currently at 8000km with the car and did the break in service at 2000km.

I have a 2015 M5 with 2450 miles as of today. My low oil light came on today as I was running errands. I went straight to the dealership and they added 2 quarts and it then registered full or maximum.
Keep in mind I had the break in service done at exactly 1200 miles as per BMW specs. That means my car has consumed 2 quarts of oil in the last 1250 miles. As far as break in goes I followed the recommended procedure in the manual explicitly, no deviation. I'm at a loss as I feel this is excessive for a brand new car. My service advisor started an oil consumption test today, so we will see how it goes.

Don't worry. I was burning a quart every 1000 miles with my 13 F10 M5. It's normal

One litre over 25,000 miles (I added one litre at 13,000) although the car didn't tell me it was needed at first, I checked the oil level on the fly and it said OK, I then did a full check and it came up with +1.
I'll be checking tomorrow as the mileage is near that again.

2013 M5. 3/2013 build. Purchased in May 2015 with 22k miles. 33k miles now. 10k miles on current oil change. Hasn't burned a drop. And I drive it very, very hard.
Folks complained about oil burning on the e9x M3 as well. I put 30k hard miles on my 11. Never burned a drop. Drive 'em hard. They love it. -James
