I understand you'd like to put this event behind you, but a question you might ask BMW, "Do you use the same steering rack for the M3?" The pertinent info for the forum members would be what actually failed. With that info we might be able to monitor our cars more carefully to avoid the nasty failure you experienced. I agree, a steering failure shouldn't ever happen and that's why I'd hope that BMW might want to examine your steering rack to find the cause of the failure. That sort of failure with low mileage has to be unusual.

I wasn't either, just saying if BMW had done nothing or had taken months to sort there would be reason to jump up and down and complain, I see nothing here that gets near to a complaint.

Maybe involving a lawyer right away is a bit extreme, but I wouldn't just accept it as a risk of driving. I would make sure BMW look into it. Time and time again we see automakers ignored early warnings or complaints, and not doing anything until something major happened or getting sued. If the OP had suffered a major injury, would people here still say OP should have known that driving is inherently dangerous because cars will inevitably fail on you? Or will we say the OP should sue the crap out of BMW? It's one thing to have squeaks inside the car, but quite another to have steering fail on you at high speed. I don't fault the OP for being upset, because it could have killed him. Last edited by Phatcat; 06-30-2016 at 02:30 AM.. |

So because no one can 100% insure against failure you are basicly saying don't build cars because they may fail?
As for the OP being upset, understandable but he should have known the risks of driving let alone driving at speed, as long as BMW retify the fault, which they have, he now needs to deside if he wants to continue driving- same risks, what ever car or marque he desides to own- nothing has changed for him or us from this. All I want is some rational posting not hysterics. |

I'm saying while there are no 100% fail safe cars, there are certain thing you don't expect to happen, such as steering failure. Or like Takata airbags, I sure hell don't expect airbag will explode for no reason with shrapnels shooting out it. |

Here's the last update on this story.
My m5 has been in the shop for last three weeks. I picked up the car after the steering rack was replaced. Drove for 10 miles problem came back in the parking lot as I was parking. Took it back to the dealer they couldn't replicate the problem. After shop Forman drove the car for 3 days I was told to take home and see if it will happen again. At this time my blood was pumping they want me to die so I can verify the problem Drove out of the dealership next stop light the problem magically reappeared Drove back to the dealer showed the problem got it verified by shop Forman. After 2 more days got a call from senior tech that said the following" The BMW had been contacted and they want to verify that nothing was tempered with the car" I was shocked by this statement. After the BMW verified that it's all good as far as tempering. Car is getting all steering components replaced down to the hoses. Even BMW doesn't know what is wrong with the car. That's why everything is being replaced. Now as far as my lawyer comment right out of the gate this is not the first problem with this car. It seems every 3k to 5k it goes to the shop for some kind of repair. I love BMW just this m5 been nothing but trouble for me. Got my self m3 comp will see how this one will be. The more advanced the car become more problems they will have. |

Been following this thread since day 1; speed kills. Foolish to believe mechanical failures are never going to occur ... It's the risk we each assume when we decide to drive at elevated speeds in less than ideal conditions. My .02

You wouldn't be saying this if it was your M5 in the shop. No matter what, we need to have confidence in our cars abilities when we drive our cars.

Don't misconstrue my original post in terms of my expectations for a vehicle such as this and agree that we should have the confidence you expressed in your post. With that said, my original intent was to remind us all that mechanical failures will occur and it's effect is only amplified by higher rates of speed. How often do you see these types of failures in multi-million dollar F1 or IRL Cars that have devastating consequences? Again, I'm realistic and try to manage when and where I choose to drive at triple digit speeds.
