A Remington 870 is about as perfect a home defense weapon as you'll ever find. I've got two - one on each side of the bed. You'd not know it if you walked into my bedroom and took a look around, either. Then again, if you have gotten past my dogs and the human, you're deemed friendly and could just ask and be shown. I feed them, the 870's, 00 buck in a reduced recoil load. No need in including my neighbors in dry wall repair.

You truely cannot beat a shotgun, especially at the average engagement distance in a house. Another hot topic is semi-auto or pump for home defense? I have discussed this on many a gun boards. Most people stick with pump. I however think a semi-auto is more valuable in a HD situation. When you're in your house, at 2am in the morning, you will have adrenaline rushing. When this happens you have a very high chance of short stroking your gun. You also might need that crutial second shot to take down the crackhead in your house. Another thing a pump doesn't have is speed. I choose a semi-auto because you have speed and most of all, if properly maintained, it will out perform a pump. If you keep a semi-auto shotgun action lightly oiled, it will shoot no doubt. Especilly with LE/Military buckshot. BTW, I shoot a Winchester Super X2 Practical MkII. My 3 Gun shotgun as well. Never failed me before. |

My old Benelli M1 would not digest the Federal tactical loads well until I had about 1,000rds through it. A buddy's ate them from day one. Make sure whatever you decide to use for defense loads you run a few hundred through your weapon from various shooting stances. You don't want to be in the middle of shitting your skirt when you realize your S&W MP doesn't like those Gold Dots the guy behind the counter, who generally doesn't know shit, sold you.
Whatever you decide to use, make sure you shoot it enough to develop muscle memory. When the SHTF, minor motor ability is the first thing to go out the window. You will also begin to dig deeper into your mid-brain. Program your computer to do the right thing before you need it. You will never rise to the occasion, only sink to the level of your preparedness. --The 7 P's -- |

Yup. Make sure to buy at least 200 rounds of what you plan to use for your HD ammo and run it through your gun, reguardless long gun or handgun.
I like: Winchester SXT, Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dot, Cor-bon, and Federal Hydra-Shok. Remeber to get JHP's! (Jacketed Hollow Points) |

I swear we have another one of these threads already.. Anyway, the Desert Eagle is total shit. That gun is a beast to handle, and getting a proper holster that fits it is garbage.
I have a STI Executive along with a safariland holster, works great, and gets shit done. |

at the expense/chance of sounding like an ignorant fool, whats the appeal of owning handguns and in some cases fully automatic machinery? seems a bit overkill. . .self defense or just a fetish/hobby/obsession sort of thing. . .im not knocking anyone here just interested. . .

1. Work related 2. I like the challenge of shooting. Doesn't have to be a rifle or pistol. I spent a few hours day before yesterday shooting a crossbow with my father-in-law. You'll laugh, but I actually got scope-eye from the damned thing. Never fired one before. Then all of a sudden, I'm walking 40yds every five shots fetching bolts, hurrying back and trying to adjust for the heavier wind than normal to get the perfect shot. |

You all have some nice weapons.
I have a Beretta PX4 Storm in 9mm. Great gun...I plan on getting something in .45 cal soon. I used to have a Colt King Cobra .357. Fun gun, but the 9 is much more accurate, at least in my hands.

.45 is too expensive to play with these days...anything over a .22 for that matter is too expensive. hehe.

For owners and ppl who have experience, if I'm getting my 1st handgun 9mm or .45? I've only shot 9mm and I feel comfortable with the kick. Is a .45 a lot worse and also do you need that kind of stopping power for home defense or will a 9mm do fine?
Thanks =D |

Honestly, I don't have a gun, been to the range several times though.
Here's my advice - any gun is sufficient for home defense if your accurate enough with it - even a .22 will kill if you're really accurate. Go with what you can hit your target with from a reasonable distance away (within the home scenario). No point getting a bigger gun if you're just shooting space around the target. I'm pretty good with a 9mm, ok with a .45 or a 10mm and I'm all over the place with a .50cal (though I felt moderatly good that at least I hit the general vicinity of what I was shooting for on the target, but there wasn't much in terms of grouping! ) |

As was stated earlier, I would go with a shotgun for home defense.
