I think one of the instructors said, and I am paraphrasing - the M3 just fits like a well made suit. I totally agree with this...just instills confidence and is, IMO more fun to drive on the track. Any way you slice it though, for how big the M5/6 are they really do handle pretty damn well. And are a hoot to drive!

Sounds like you all had a great M School experience. I enjoyed my M School last year, albiet with the E60 M5.

Great write up. I had a similar experience in 2009 with the last gen M5/6, and swore I'd get an M3 before it went out of production, and I ended up getting mine while y'all were drive to lunch after the M studio tour. I need to go back to the school to try out the new cars, but I'm afraid it will be another expensive school as I'll want to add another ///M to the stable.
Glad y'all had so much fun!

definitely a great write up and in depth review. this is really valuable to potential buyers.
as you mentioned the "issues" with the M6, I couldn't agree more. My friends has an orange one and i sat in the car. he doesnt want to seat more than 2 people in the car. It is an eye catcher no doubt but that car attracts some unwanted attention being that colore..... he already got keyed....... I think the problem with this car is that BMW tried whatever worked on the M5 and then simply moved to the M6. It is lighter but not that light. your point about the exhaust is one of the points that's really magnifies the "problem" of the M6. BMW tried to save money and they did. M6 should out perform the M5 significantly otherwise what's the point of buying M6 besides the looks and exclusiveness? and the M6 GC is even heavier than the M6.... ugh.... now BMW is still testing the new M3 which is a good thing! I think the Perfect M car for the track would be this combo E46 M3 chassis with S65 engine running stand alone. just my opinion, that's it.

RPIM5, great write up. At what speeds were you doing when you stood on the breaks. Also, can you tell us if you experienced or heard any break squealing or screeching like other M5 owners have complained about?

The BMW Performance Driving School was one of the best experiences of my life. I can't say that enough. Absolutely everything was top notch. I went Summer 2010.
Who were the instructors for the ///M school? Just wondering. Glad you guys did this and posted about it. Looks like a ton of fun...actually I know it is.

I think this combo you refer to is going to be called the F82 M4. If BMW makes it as light or lighter than the E46 combined with the power of the S65 engine and 100 more ft/lbs of torque, we'll have a real track destroyer on our hands.

The ///M school- driving experience sounds like a ton of fun.
Looks like you all should schedule some track time at a local bmwcca hpde (if you haven't already done so). Sure, it's your car on track instead of someone else's, but the its a ton of driving time at your skills limit (while raising your skills). |
