One of the reasons (just an educated guess) could be that BMW built too many 2014 M5's. There are over 450 in stock at dealers nationwide. Compare that with ~30 RS7's or 150 Panamera Turbo's.... BMW has a lot of M5's to sell. Often when car makers have too much inventory of a particular car whey wind up in rental fleets to 1. offload some inventory and 2. spur car sales.
Not sure where you got 150 Panamera Turbo's? I was with my friend last night who manages a Porsche Dealer, he showed me the dealer inventory screen. There were over 275 Panamera Turbo's in dealer stock, these cars were not pre ordered for customers, a few of them were north of 200K !!

In Miami yesterday they had 1 M5, 1 E63. And also these 2 beauties.

I had a reservation for a Full Size and got upgraded to a Maxima. When I asked for a lower mileage car I was told that Hertz has very few low mileage cars because their policy is to run cars to 72,000 miles before replacing.

What were they asking for the California?

I was in Atlanta a few months ago and saw that Hertz had a Merc SLS. I think they wanted either $1,250 or $1,750 per day!

cars.com - not as accurate as a dealer but in practice not that far off from actual #'s as it also includes customer sold order cars that may only apprear for a day or so. Usually the cars.com inventory numbers are *higher* than actual inventory.

stock #'s as of today:

Panamera Turbo (122)
Turbo Executive (80)
Turbo S (13)
Turbo S Executive (3)
Base or Unknown (250)

Some of the "unknowns" I'm sure are Panamera Turbo's. I was counting the Turbo and Exec #'s only at the time (they are higher now, but still even at 275 is lower than the stock levels of M5's. although given that # you can probably get a pretty terrific deal on a Panamera Turbo now as well.

Saw the "dream car" holding pen at Hertz SFO this weekend (the gran coupes were just to the right out of camera view). Rate to rent the M5 was a $300 no-show fee (applies to rental), and a total of 1301.00 (tax included) USD for a 2 day Fri-Sun rental.

About $1,800-$2,000/day for the Cali and equivalent (Galardo, R8, SLS, etc).

LMAO!! What do you care? Do you somehow think you are part of some "exclusive" club? If you want that, you need to spend $200,000 plus, not under a $100,000 on a car that sells thousands of copies a year.

I already wrote why I care, but since you obviously failed to read it correctly I will spell it out

1) Fleet sales kills resale value by causing accelerated depreciation
2) I own an M5

Therefore BMWs decision to sell to fleets has raised my cost of ownership.

I rented a white M5 from Hertz last week; picked up in Tampa and returned to Orlando. Heavily discounted thanks to work's deal and another $100 off due to a cluster f**k on return resulted in a $500 bill for 3+ days.

National had two M5's in Orlando too.

Sounds like a plan. I would certainly rent the car for the track rather than take my own.

Sounds good. Next time I travel I will look for a rental m5 so I can play with it off the track. It is on my short list so a couple of days in one at legal speeds would be wonderful way to evaluate the car as a daily driver.

I don't know if it will be representative. Most Hertz cars are poorly maintained and slightly out of alignment.

Stealth - you won't like this but you could just rent out your other ///M5 (if not sold).
Set-up and properly and buy renter's coverage et voilą... you'll be making $1,000/ day (I know, prob. not) in lieu of absorbing the depreciation.

You think your resale value is affected because someone can rent your car type? How many do you think are flooding the markets to accelerate your depreciation? You already spelled out that you own an M5, adding it again doesn't make me laugh less. These are garden variety cars. Their value drops like a rock in the first 3 years and M5s drop faster than 535s and 528s which are even more garden variety than your car.

Your post makes it sound like you just don't like people being able to rent the high end car that you are making monthly payments on. Maybe you'll feel better knowing your daily cost to drive is less than theirs?

Well if you think there is no linkage then I think you just lack experience selling cars.

I sell a car every year, and I usually sell privately but I also look at trade in. I can tell you from past experience that rental car sales had a material effect on resale for Mercedes and Jaguar.

BTW I don't make monthly payments.
