The ram air intakes look fantastic, do not disagree. My current setup is bmc panel filters, closed air boxes with metal plater, the bottom pipes are normal as connnected to draw air from the front. Combined with front rpi scoops, I can tell you straight its a decent set up. No heat soak, and plently of cold air being rammed in from the scoops. Feels strong, feels good.

One log. Note outside temp was around 19.5C. First date set was at standstill after 30 mile run the accelorating through to the last data set where I was stopped again and you see the under bonnet temp rise. IATS stayed at 31C through out. Note IATs are measured by the TMAP sensors in the outlet from the intercooler, as there was no change in the IAT temps, the intercoolers have more than enoough capacity to deal with the tubo heat load AND any 'heat soak' where ever it comes from.
Ch1= Behind the bumper in front of the OEM airbox inlet pipe (where folks fit their airscopes etc) to measure air temps in the void by the radiator and what the OEM airbox feeds off. Ch2= Inside the modified airbox / Ramair filter at the top (heat rises) so shows what the modified intake is taking in. Ch3= Inside the engine bay by the coolant top-up cap- sensor in 'fresh air' to measure actual engine bay temps. If you buy new BMC, make sure you let it sit on a paper towel overnight before installing. Over oiled BMC have cause many M5 guys to revert back to OEM filters due to CEL.

JNoSol,
Thats my next test to prove or debunk, its hard to improve on the ~1 degree delta I had with my cut open air boxes. I will do fully open i.e no air box top and full OEM next. Intercoolers and Meth all make this redundant but its interesting never the less! NA cars are much more succepable than our turbo cars period but thats an apples and ornage test! |

Right... swopped over both my DIY Ramair filters and cut up airboxes and fitted one OEM airbox and one Ramair with only the bottom half airbox still in place.
Ch 1: is the air temp infront of the radiator next to the airbox air feed pipes to show actual 'ambient the air filters are being feed. Ch2: is the open Ramair with no airbox lid. Taken inside the filter tube. Ch3: is the OEM airbox taken inside the filter tube. Ch4: engine bay ambient temps to show worst case air temps and how well or not the filters are being effected. I will get IATs from the JB4 and record ture ambient air temp from the dash display. Waiting for the roads to dry out and then will log temps. Some photos of the setup... |

So your full on CAI will get you a max delta of ~3C degrees on OEM and 5C on a modified unsealed air box and 6-10C on a fully open air box at rest?
IATs remained steady through out the runs and even side to side- no measurable change. Conclusion: At worst case (parked, running, fully hot, not a dyno where there are fans running and the hood is up venting all the hot air!) ~10C delta. ~$2-3k for a cold air system is not worth it or even modifying your OEM air box to enclose the cone filter like I did. The Ramair laid ontop of the airbox lid wins hands down at $100! Probably runs the OEM close as the OEM filters are more expensive than the Ramair system!! FYI this is the data logger I used with 4x 3m K type thermocouples as they are fast acting. |

I installed these filters as well as a muffler delete at the same time. My car has night vision so I was only able to get one scoop installed on the right side.
After a few miles the CEL came on and the car is throwing a "System too rich - bank 2" code. Any ideas on what might be the problem? Could the single scoop cause it or could it be MAF? |

I would not run just 1 x scoop, it will cause an imbalance. Remove scoop, clear fault and test again - hope you sort.. also be careful when refitting your pipes, any foreign object could damage maf's

Thanks for the advice! I removed the scoop and cleared the code but it reappeared, unfortunately. I cleaned and swapped the MAFs and will wait to let the engine cool completely before testing again. If that doesn't work, I'll have to put it all back to stock and if that doesn't resolve the problem, I'll have to take it in to the dealer.

Yes the connectors are secure and I cleaned them as well. In the original positions, the long term fuel trim read around -21 and maxed out at -25 for bank 1 and bank 2, respectively. After switching the MAFs, they both sat at -25, all at idle so I'm thinking I am going to have to put it nacho to stock and take it in.

If not scoop related, sounds maf related, cleaning them wont help now if one is now broken or faulty. The air filters and muffler delete wont be causing this

Well from what I heard you can pull a code when doing a muffler delete if you didn't cap off the boost line in the rear that opens and closes the valves. You need to close it off. Or just rewind your steps

Yes I've heard that as well, I checked the vacuum lines and they're both sealed properly. I'm going to start putting parts back to stock and see what the fuel trims do. I found a used set of air filter boxes that I'm waiting to be delivered so if I did happen to damage an MAF, I'll bee able to know for sure. Luckily my mufflers were replaced under warranty a while ago so I can just slip them back on.

This person has almost the same mods and similar codes/CEL so I am inclined to believe that the large change to air flow in the car might be causing it as well but my fuel trim values are more significantly out of spec.
