My post was not about the M5 being a dedicated track car. What I said was that most people bitching about it being too big or too heavy for the track have never taken it to the track. Of they had they'd realize it's an all around amazing car that is more than capable (and faster around a track like Watkins Glen than many dedicated track cars) of being tracked regularly and is in my opinion, all things considered, truly the best all around car

How is the move from SoCAL treating you thus far?

My only criticism of the car is traction. Anything over than perfectly dry roads and the TC light lights up regularly.
Love the car though and realised when buying a 500+BHP Rear wheel drive car that traction would be limited.

And yet it is faster on the track than any of BMWs other offerings. Everyone considers the M3 to be the track car, but until we get numbers from the F30/32, the F10 M5 (and the ZCP even more so) are faster around most tracks, to include the Nurburgring than any other OEM BMW produces.

The amazing part of this is that it does this despite having a different intended design... it intends to be a 4-5 person autobahn killer, not a track beast, and yet its more than capable.

All things be equal, unless I was tracking multiple cars, I'd much rather have a luxurious DD that could rage on the track, than a dedicated tracker that was a pain to drive to work every day.

The M5's intended purpose? There is no right answer precisely because it can do so much, and be so many different types of car to so many different types of driver.

Apparently you have no idea about how these M5 used to take on corvettes on the track. But then again, you probably never watched American races.

Prohaps I should have said not designed for the track, yes it will work on a track for occasional use on one , but personally I would not use this type of car for that.

Indeed. Let us count the ways...

1. Luxurious family sedan (Spacious back seat and Rear Seat Entertainment Option anyone?)
2. Luxurious executive sedan (Almost a limousine type habitat in the back seat)
3. Luxurious transporter (For those days you need to haul 5 people in your M5)
4. Almost ultimate bank robbing heist vehicle (500ft/lbs of torque for easy escape situations, need I say more?)
5. Understated Racecar (For those who don't like to attract too much attention, but also like to drive like a bat out of hell from time to time)
6. All out Racecar (For those with 100% Full Straightpipes, like me! )
7. Single persons multipurpose vehicle (For those who don't have a wife or kids, but like to use the room from time to time to transport lots of friends and have a racecar at the same time).
8. Fantastic Private Jet for the Road (B-1 Pilot's favorite description)
9. Almost unparalleled concert hall vehicle (For those with the Bang & Olufsen sound system)
10. A once in a while track car (Can still lap a stock E92 M3)
11. Dedicated track car (With modifications of course)
12. Autobahn Highspeed Cruiser (Better with Euro Drivers Package 190mph speed limiter)
13. Effective Dragstrip racecar (Didn't Stealth Pilot get mid-11's with his stock F10 M5?)
14. BabyonBoard sedan (Many people put baby seats in the back to haul their infants around, try that in a 911. Lol!)
15. Excellent Drifting car (World record for longest drift was in an F10 M5. Take that, stupid 14' Mercedes E63 AMG-S. Lol!)
16. Let's not forget it's the worlds fastest taxi! (Nurburgring FTW!)
17. Worlds fastest Police Car (Or should I say Polizei Auto)
18. The Stig's daily driver (Some say...)
19. The ultimate roadtrip car (Ask me how I know. )
20. A car loved and hated by all other drivers on the road. (More hated than loved when you have straightpipes on your M5 though. Lol!)
21. Daily Driver commuter car. (Getting to work has never been so much fun!)
22. And last but not least, a total chick magnet car. (Again, ask me how I know. )

The real question is what can't the M5 do? Maybe 4x4 Offroading?! Lol! Go buy a Ford Raptor for that. Haha!

We all know what this car's main allure is. A fantastic private jet for the road, capable of devouring huge amounts of roads effortlessly. I need a car that I can transport 4-5 adults in total comfort with superior handling and speed, and that can occasionally have some fun at the track also. I take this car to the track 6-8 times a year. I am not racing anyone at the track, I am enjoying the limits of this car, and having an absolute ball doing it! If I devour quite a few "focused sports" cars in the process, so be it. We know going in that this is a heavy car just by looking at it. If you want a more track focused car, the M3 is a wonderful choice. Just try to put four adults in it for any length of time. This car does exactly what the designers created it for.
Well spoken, I agree wholeheartedly!!!!

I too wonder if the people deriding the F10 M5 as"too heavy" really understand the car's purpose. I've tracked my 13 F10 M5 on a drag strip, auto cross and road course. I've also got a set of 408M winters and drive it in the snow. This car is flat out the best all rounder I've ever had the pleasure of owning. I don't mind how the weight on road course makes you really pay attention at the limit with corner entry and exit speed. Yes you need to be on your game to get the M5 around corners. To me, that's the point. I'm no professional and not a great track driver but I have no problem hanging with stock M3s driven by other amateur enthusiast like me around "most" road course corners and blow right by them on the straights. Admittedly auto cross is all M3.

Yes it's true if you want to track the M5 often then upgrades like the CP and CCB would be recommended but my non LCI non CP non CCB M5 is a blast at the track. I have unapologetic driving pleasure wherever and whenever I decide to plant my right foot. Buy a lighter car if you want one; as for me, I'm not giving up one once of luxury, safety, or performance. Like the band Queen so eloquently says; "I want it all and I want it now".. To me, this is the essence of the M5. IMHO of course
