Valet - Do you?

Ok...informal poll. Do you valet park your car or no? Or only special occasions?

Do you tip at the outset and again when you see the 4 tires are still on?

Sure, when I have to. The F10 M5 is much more idiot proof than the E60 M5. I was a lot more worried with my old M5 than with my new one. Also it's always kept up front which means it's driven a few feet and parked.

Not a chance. I've heard too many first-hand horror stories (from former valets) about valets abusing cars, especially the really nice cars.

I am as OCD as the next guy when it comes to my car, but there are times that you have little choice but to valet. After all, it is just a car. If I took another one of my cars evey time I was less than 100% certain that I would be able to self park in a perfect space, I wouldn't get to drive the car much. It reminds me of my friend's dad when we were growing up. He splurged for the rear defroster in his new LTD, but would never use it for fear that it had a limited life or would otherwise break!

When I need to valet, I always do 2 things. First, I am always very nice, friendly and respectful to the valet. They are doing a job and you expect them to do it professionally, so why treat them any other way? Second, I always tip them generouosly (but not obnoxiously) and always up front. I make a self deprecating joke about how protective I am about the car and ask them to keep it someplace where it will be very safe. At the end of the day, you are at their mercy. If they think you are a nice, generous person that can relate to them, they are far more likely to treat your car with the respect it deserves.

Never. Most time you have no recourse if your car gets damaged. I won't even take my car to the car wash.

Never!

I watch the technician at service center to let my car roll back towards the wall because they don't understand DCT, what can you expect valet driver would do?

Absolutely at the right establishment, and I can see where they are parking it. It's just a car.

Garage List
I never valet. Although sometimes if the valet has a space up front, I may pay $20-40 to park in front and keep the key.

Nugent and I valet parked our M5s at the Omni in SF. $53ea not including tip. Both were kept out front next to each other. No regrets.

But in general I only valet if there are no self parking spots. I.e. any big city.

My concern is two-fold: 1) will they hoon my car. This one is addressed with your "right establishment" comment and I agree; but 2) if they don't know how to park it properly, and they park on an incline, you're very likely going to find your beast having rolled away from the inexperienced parker and risk damage as a result.

No.

But again, if the M5 is a beater type of vehicle in your collection, then it might not matter to you.

Its just a car but a curbed wheel is not just a curbed wheel... I have had valet's curb my wheels twice so it depends on where Im going and how the lot looks (high curbs, cement blocks, reputable restaurant/place, etc).
