CHP was following us with his driving lights only so did not see him, CHP cars back then only did about 100 so he did not catch up until I slowed down. Only reason he did not take me to Jail was he did not want to drive me 70 miles to the nearest Juvi jail. Judge suspended my license for 6 weeks. I was lucky it was not longer. I told him I had a job and needed to drive to work. I had 2 tickets at ages 12 & 14 for driving a Motorcycle without a license so the judge was not thrilled with me. It was classified as Wreckless Driving and stayed on my driving record for 7 Years !! Same as a DUI !! These days they would probably take a 16 year old's license away for at least 2 years, if not more for that.
This similar to mine. I was 17 and had a 61 TR3 back in 1973 and I was racing a friend who had a 59. We were on hwy 146 which splits and I had beat him to the split and took the newer part. I thought he had followed me as there were some lights behind me, I was doing top end on the car which was 105 and the speed limit was 70, this was before double nickels were everywhere. Anyway, all of a sudden the lights turned into cherries and I about crapped my pants. I stopped and got out of the car and explained I had been racing my friend, no on else was around at the time. The DPS guy said he saw my friend take the old part of the road but he was already driving on the newer part. He let me off with a warning due to the fact he was headed home for dinner.

I have always been careful about when and where I speed. There are lots of places in Texas you can do it without any worry of a cop if you know where to go. Cops aren't everywhere and they sure aren't out on most of the back roads such as FMxxx. Generally those roads are paved well enough to hit the limiter on the M5. I think for the most part the speed limit laws are about generating revenue and not improving road safety.

Truth. Cars are becoming more safe with technology and yet we still have outdated speed limits from Traffic and Engineering Survey's conducted decades ago. I find that it is actually very difficult for me to do the posted speed limit of 55mph on the Capital Beltway on the Virginia side because almost everyone is doing 65-70mph. I once tried really hard to stay at exactly 55mph and I almost got into 5 collisions in only 5 miles of driving.

Here in Texas where I live we have a road with an 85 mph speed limit. I drive the 80mph part of it fairly often. I10 west of San Antonio all the way to El Paso is 80mph and while there are some DPS out there, there are plenty of places they aren't. US 285 north of Pecos is desolate.

The road is lumpy in some places but go as fast as you want, no cops out there, no jurisdiction, no people for miles around. North of Orla, there is nothing. Here is Orla.

Yeah I know what you mean. I think we're mostly talking about in cities though.

OK, my turn... It was 1981, I was driving my brand new Maserati and the "Bill Walsh" song came on the radio... "My Maserati does 185, I lost my license now I can't drive"

I wondered... How fast will the car really go? I was about 50 miles east of Kansas City on Interstate 70. A very flat very long stretch of road.

As the speedo passed 150, I let my foot off the gas, just too fast for me. Way off in the distance I saw a car coming my way. He flipped on his lights when we were about 1/4 mile apart.

For a moment I thought... No way he can catch me and I floored it.

My plan was to take the first exit then head left which would have been North. As the on-ramp approached I stepped on the brakes. The ABS kicked in BIG TIME, this was my first car with ABS. Smoke screeching, it was going to be a fast left turn. That's when I saw the cop car sideways blocking the exit.

That's when I learned the lesson "You Can't Outrun Motorola". He gave me five citations. Speeding, Flight, Reckless Driving, Public Endangerment, Resisting Arrest. Put me in the back of the squad car.

At the Highway patrol station I posted a $50,000 bond with my Montgomery Wards Club Card.

When I got to court, turns out the Judge was an old business acquaintance of mine. He took one look at me and said "I told you that car was going to be trouble". I had no idea he was a judge, I though he was an attorney in town.

"Case dismissed! If I see you in here again you're going to jail for a long time" he said as he banged the gavel.

That's my story... Don't speed unless a judge knows you!

Not to be a dick but........

Bill Walsh was coach of the 49ers back then and it was Joe Walsh formerly of the James Gang and Eagles who had the Maserati song (Life's Been Good).

I heard that song on the way home from work today...great song but it's from 1978 and I don't think any Maseratis could go 185 back then - but hey, it sounds good and it rhymes so a little poetic license never hurt.

Here my story , my first and only speeding ticket.

I was going at about 2.00 AM in the morning , in a high way without any cars , and lots of space in my e92 m3 , around 180 to 210 kmh , just cruising , and the limit its 120 km h , i was sleepy , so i go fast , to be more aware of things.

I just looked and puf a flash ! , after about 20 km , like 40 cops in a service station pullover every car.

I payed 300 euros ( caught 198 km/h ) and i Lost my license for 30 days.

What type of radar see up you have now?
If you are gonna drive like your grandma then you'd better save the money!
A dreaded mentioned indeed when you get such a bad record and you are in love with cars!
Have a friend of mine who's an instructor and yet drives like a grandma all the time to my total surprise !! He has Z06 2012! ! And I never felt like he'd drive wild anywhere out of a track !!
But he tracks his car every other weekend !! Actually hr purchased my Audi Q7 to tow his Z06 -

And this is the most stupid ticket I have got.
8 months ago the day I got my M6, I pulled the car out of dealer and entered the free way (I-5) and was excited how fast this car reached 100 (Speedo).
I used to drive my F13 650 for about two years so I was so familiar with IDrive.
As soon as I reached that speed, tried to set the speed warning at 80. I was playing with IDrive and then looked at the back mirror to see the traffic behind and shooot. I saw the lights... I did exit Freeway and he pulled me over. I simply explained him that I just got the car and am not familiar with this car. he mentioned that he knew what kind of beast are M cars and gave me speeding ticket for driving 90 over 65...The good thing, I had chance to take traffic school; now I have to wait another 10 months (to complete 18 months) to try it again

Lame! Sorry to hear you got so unlucky. It's really hit or miss with CHP. But there's actually A LOT of really really cool cops there. Compared to Virginia, the CHP are Saints. Lol!

2010 I was moving from Northern CA to Southern CA and our last trip with the wife to move the final crap out of the storage was in my 2006 bmw x5 4.8is.
We were on I-5 and this Cayenne decides to mess with me. I look over at my wife and she says "get him". It was 2am and nobody else was on a long stretch.
I start reeling him in and pulling at 130, 140mph and as we pass an overpass I am 2 cars ahead and I see parking lights of a cop car hiding under the overpass behind the wall. We both slow down and I see that the cop start moving and turns on his red and blue lights. I pull over on the shoulder and because I knew I was getting and Cayenne kept on going.
License and registration....he assumes I knew why i was being stopped and I told him that a Porsche started messing with us and pride took over and that we were moving and this was our final trip. I told the wife to act upset and she told the cop that she told me not to speed. He came back and said "well I clocked you at 140mph, your wife will be pissed at you for the next 4 hours of your trip, your suv is packed to the roof and I dont think you want to come back to court here. At least you beat a Porsche and you stopped to make things easier for me. I will give you a verbal warning and go after the Porsche. Be safe."

I loved that truck.

Nice story.

Lol I noticed the same when I lived in DC Atlanta is even worse the posted speed limit on 285 (atlanta bypass) is 55 and no one except maybe travelers do less than 80 and the cops don't even bother.

Moved to Charleston SC about 6 months ago and about to pull my hair out in Atlanta everyone went 10-20 over here everyone goes 5 under no joke drives me crazy even on back roads if it's 35 then 30, 45 then 40 lol it nuts
