You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

When they say M model I am assuming they just mean the m5 m6 and m3 and m4. because the X6M AND X5M are all wheel drive. They act like they never made AWD cars before with X DRIVE.

well if you are too pure you end up like SAAB -> pretty much in the bin.

AWD M has existed for years on the X platform.

key issue is optional which is done for two reasons! keep the entry price for the car down but milk you for the optional upgrade. Look at the comp pack, 7K to replace parts that you already have. huh?

Many people will take the AWD mostly to handle the inclement weather snow etc where M cars struggle.

I think it's a shame BMW are behind on this they should be leading the way.

for me AWD == yawn

try a 911 with 4 or 2 wheel drive the 2 wheeler is much more fun.
although sadly light at the front.

no big issue for me for BMW to offer this as long as it's optional

If it's an optional it could be ok.

They need to reduce the weight before thinking on everything else. The F10 compared to the E39 it's a whale and if they continue with this trend the next Gxx will be the size of an 7 series.

Finally

Finally they got it. Porsche went this way with 993 in 1990s and they knew why.
All I remember from my test drive with an M5 was frustrating lack of traction..

i would be much happier if he saved 200+ lbs with a lighter next Gen m5 vs an awd m5. biggest issue is weight!

It's not selling out, it's good business. BMW loses customers to other brands simply because they don't offer these options that people want. As long as they continue to offer the vehicle with a RWD Stick option I don't understand what people crying about. Beside, you can put x-drive plenty of tire smoking sideways around a bends on the ring as easily as RWD if you know what you're doing...

It doesn't snow where I live. AMG buyers might go AWD because that is simply a MB buyer thing.

To be honest, this is probably a great decision and marketing play... AWD is like automatic transmissions -- to the purists, it's a sin... but its the future and the way every high-performance car manufacturer is going.
I think this option will further advance the M5 as the luxury supersport sedan, and keep the M3/4 as the highly trackable fun car/entry level performance machine.

My question is which one is going Hydrogen-powered first?

Cold.. will not give you the source via a link because he and only he has the know how and inner workings of M division and it is a secret he cannot disclose .

Saying there is no R&D budget for M division is so absurd there is no need to comment further. I don't think AWD in M will be traditional system with dual driveshafts. I think it will be something of a hybrid like ferrari ff with dual gearbox (one main one and one small one) and combination of same gear ratios to drive the front wheels when there is reduced grip, (mimics AWD)

I guess never save never with M division?

People fail to realize that forum enthusiasts are not the only ones buying BMWs. There are many M5 & M6 owners that would love an AWD option, that are not on the forums. My close buddy is a service manager at BMW and he has said on many occasions, customers have complained about the lack of AWD. So this future plan of an AWD option is perfect. It will finally allow BMW to find out which option the people truly prefer! Then BMW will make the necessary adjustments on the models there on out.

BMW told me that the xDrive option for the 4er only adds about 75Kg in weight to the car package. That to me seems like a very snall penalty to tick off the AWD option box.

AND... IF Audi can make their R8 handle like a RWD car... why couldn't ///M tune their xDrive version the same way. To act like a RWD car, but have the benifit of AWD when needed in rain/snow/ice. BMW now sells more cars with xDrive that AUdi does with Quattro - that is really telling.

Yet still ///M is gun shy of AWD. Doesn't anyone remember those M5 prototypes testing in the Artic a while back.

If we can have optional AWD on M5 why can't we keep optional RWD on 1 series?

No I read the press release, that's not happening until the generation after, where the 5 and 7 series move to UKL platform with transverse 2cylinder engines, and the floor panel under the driver has holes pre drilled to allow stiletto heel driving. There will of course be optional brake lights and headlights on the 5 series and above. The 3's will make do with candles and fairy lights unless you pay 1500 for the optional torches. The engines will also make no noise unless you pay for the Harmon Kardon engine noise generators, this option is only available however on 5 and above. 3 series drivers will be offered a CD recording of a Golf driver making engine noises as an optional upgrade with added screeches for the understeer. 1 series owners will be able to buy optional additional wheels so that the 4th generation model can be used as a car as well as a wheel barrow.

To be clear, I posted this in jest, because its very obvious the M division is alive and well, and considering all technologies out there.

While i hear all the purists on here, I'm not sure if its nostalgia, forum group-think, or a real concern, but to me, i want my preferred car manufacturer to adapt and adopt new technology when it makes sense performance-wise... If Bugatti, Lambo, Porsche, Audi, etc all can make AWD supercars with tangible performance benefits to that drivetrain, why wouldn't we want the ///M division to do the same? (Especially if it is an optional change)

^ This.

All this nonsense about BMW said this, //Marketing, etc is just that, nonsense. BMW exists fundamentally to make money. They must continue to evolve and change not only in order to compete, but also to meet new safety and efficiency regulations. That means, turbos, awd, weight increases, etc.

You cannot adhere to prior generations' dogma in order to remain competitive and relevant.

Never say never...
