Next Gen M5 supposedly has been confirmed with same engine as F10 M5 and xDrive only

The poster on this thread on the other side of the forum shared some tidbits of info. In one line he managed to dash my hopes for the next M5, if it is true of course.

So he states that the Next Generation M5 (I'm not convinced yet it will be called the F90) will have the same S63tu engine as the F10 M5 and will be AWD only, BUT! I still think that ///M is going to introduce the next M5 and M6 with a pushbutton setup where the driver can select if they want AWD or RWD. I really think that the front two wheels are going to be powered by electric motors, as it is what the BMW i8 uses and what has been talked about with the eDrive concept.

I do think that if the eDrive concept does make it into the next M5/M6 the S63tu engine might even offer less power and better fuel efficiency but will have the electric motors to reach that 600hp limit that ///M stated a while back would be their ceiling for hp on all future ///M cars.

I don't want to start a rant, but this is just a sad state of affairs for the next M5. They are going to develop all kinds of exciting new technologies for the car, but the engine. With an xDrive setup, I'm sure we'll be seeing 0-60 times in the 3.0 second range too. Not sure if the next M5 is going to be too much lighter if they throw batteries in the car though, just like how the i8 isn't really that light because of its batteries.

Seems like ///M is definitely going to be focusing on more efficiency. The S85 may very well be their crowning achievement.

If that AWD thing is truth and they want to add DC motors and batteries, then the next generation of M5/M6 will be a real 4500+ lb pig

Don't forget though next Gen. Ms are supposed to take advantage of the carbon core.

Adding batteries and motors will increase the weight over 400 lb....only 200lb will be offset by CF stuff...

AWD will be big for me in New England. Do we have a better idea when the "F90" M5 will be available? My current lease is up in January 2017, I think that will end up being before the next generation M5 will be available. Don't know what I would do in the interim.

I have been thinking of what M's could have eDrive and I think the M2 CSL is what will be previewing this. I think that maybe there could be electric motors in the next M5, but hopefully they don't power down the s63.

The next M5 should be out around the Summer/Fall of 2017 time frame. The next generation 5-Series (G30) will start production around the September/October 2016 time frame.

I also forgot to mention that a while ago, BMW stated that the future G-Series 3-Series and 5-Series will all have hybrid models in their line ups, meaning even a base 328i will be a hybrid "eDrive" so to speak. BMW's definite aim in the future will be to increase efficiency and comply with the emissions targets of the future. Unfortunately the M brand has to follow suit with this, just as Porsche has gone Turbo already and they even indicated that future Porsche models will be hybrid as well (especially what's been hinted about the upcoming Pajun). Audi and Mercedes are going to be going the same direction too. I guess we're all doomed with future hybrid performance cars.

Even though it sounds disappointing and not really enthusiastic, I actually would not mind to get an updated look-wise and technology-wise m5 with current s63tu with additional e-motors and ff awd system, where fwd is active during first 3 or 4 gears only or up to certain speed, but in no way i would not want 100% of the time awd even if it was 20-80 ratio or 30-70.

it is better to have same engine with additional e-motors, as at least it wont sound as disappointing s85, it is definitely tuneable with big potentials and i am used it, so dont see it being a problem to use it in my future car

but of course NA V10 with electric motors on top of it would be awesome to have

I have been saying for a while that the next gen. M5 will likely to get the same engine as the current one.

Not that I like it, but I just don't see the current greedy BMW will invest resources for dedicated M engines.

The current one is powerful enough, it's only losing to the competition because a lack of four wheel drive, so there's no reason to develop a new engine.

All BMW has to do is do some tweaks, slap on the xDrive, put it on a new (and hopefully lighter) chassis, and there you go.

I agree that we will see the same engine plus drive. I don't think the M5 will get e-motors for the front because of weight issues.

Not sure about it having the same engine, but I am sure those wont be xDrive only. Maybe an option of getting it (same as AMG-S), but M will always have a rear wheel drive option. That is one of the main characteristics of the M.
Long time ago, people rumored F10 M5 would have xDrive... but didnt happen haha and its good!
For the next generation M5 I would definitely be happy to see old V10 atmo under the hood together with current DCT. Stock 590hp would be nice as well. and 610 hp with CP a year later...

Waiting....

When is the next generation 5 getting released?

I think we will see the xDrive before we see another V10.

V10 is harder to have cylinder deactivation and can't do twin scroll turbos so I don't think a V10 will happen again.

Nothing was said at all if it is traditional xdrive like the 550i is currently available with or a hybrid electric drive system like the i8. Or even the S63tu with electrically assisted turbos? There are lots of things we don't know yet.

The current tuned S63tu on 2016 M6 CP has 600ps (591 HP) the same as M5 Jahre which is already underrated. On the other hand the tuned S63 on X5M/X6M has 567 HP and 553 lb-ft torque; So it would be possible the tuned version of S63 engine with 600+ HP /550+ lb-ft is mounted under hood of next generation of M5/M6....I believe we will see the new or modified M DCT to handle the extra power/torque ...
TBH, IMO S63 is master piece of engineering and I don't see any reason BMW wants to replace this engine even though the platform of this engine is almost 8 years old!

Exactly, a tuned up version of the S63, new gear box, xDrive (?), a lighter chassis, and that's the next M5.

Of course BMW could surprise us with a new engine but it is unlikely.

So BMW is ok with Challenger and CTS-V having higher HP than M5? AMG E63 is probably going to have ~650+ as well. The current engine is fine as long as it can be tuned up to deliver 650+. Also would be nice to have an option to remove the speed delimiter. Having a stock 200 mph+ car would be awesome.

And please please make full merino leather standard and not have people jump hoops to get it when ordering custom!

The current engine already produced 600+. The tuned one on 2016 M6 or M5 Jahre is already produced 650+.... and don't ask me where that 650+ number is coming from but Dinan has measured 600+ for stock S63tu
