5W-30 engine oil

Manual recommends 10W-30 for new F10. Can a can here and there of 5W-30 hurt anything.

The PDF online manual specifies 0W-30 or 0W-40, with alternative weight of 5W-30 or 5W-40. Be sure the oil meets the ACEA A3/B4 or API SK/CF specification. Just look for the right spec on the can and the weight difference shouldn't matter. I haven't had a turbo motor before, and perhaps the oil spec is more important in this application.

The manual recommends either 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30 or 5w-40.

As far as I know, unless youre dealing with cold starts, the higher number is the only one that is really relevant. I use 5w-30 in both my F10 M5 and my X5M without any issues (and I am concerned about cold starts because it gets pretty frigid where I am).

10w30 . I don't see that listed anywhere.

Like the others have suggested. If you go any dealers, they will put 5w30 into your M5.

My dealer put in 07-51-0-017-954 5W-30
I picked up some Castrol Edge Professional OE 5W-30 for top off, it's LL-04. Should I have picked up a different kind. BMW Performance 5W-30 LL-01?

Want to make sure Im getting the right stuff. Thanks!

The following is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M (Motorsport) vehicles in the US market with gasoline engines, at the present time.
BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines:

Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil

Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420)

If Castrol High Performance Synthetic Oil is not available and you need to add oil between oil changes, only use synthetic oils with the following specifications for M vehicles:

Viscosity - preferred SAE 10W-60

Alternative - SAE 10W-40, SAE 5W-50 or SAE 10W-50

Use only oils with an API rating of SJ/CF, SK/CF or higher.

That is an unfortunate first post. Do some more research, you are wrong.

Obsolete technical document you are referring to... 2012+ M5/M6 engine code is S65tu. What is the date of issue on the pdf?

BMW could learn from other manufactures that rhyme with "iota" (don't flame me too bad) when issuing such documents! Put an expiry date or clearly state the date(s) of production it applies to. Not just an open ended document good for ever and ever. When I bought my M5 and first had to add oil I was confused as the manual and what was in my trunk from the dealer were different (TWS 10w60). I wanted to confirm this and I had to call 4 different BMW dealers before one in Canada (Edmonton x2, Calgary x2 and finally a Vancouver dealer (took 30 minutes to ask Master Technician) that told me BMW Performance 5W30 was a correct oil (there are 3 other weights we can use).

My point is that the first three dealers refereed to the above document as gospel... dangerous! I guess the saying is correct owners often know more then the dealers selling the car.

my dealer actually thanked me for telling them 10W-60 was wrong (thanks to this forum).
when you switch to one of the correct oil specs, you'll feel the difference.

Always refer to the manual that comes with the model year of the car. The 2013 M5 Sedan owner's manual states on page 177 to use SAE0W-30 or SAE0W-40 or alternatively,
SAE5W-30 or SAE5W-40 with specifications ACEA A3/B4, API SK/CF or superior grade specification. Page 178 states "BMW recommends Castrol".

The BMW dealer here in my location actually uses Shell, due to sponsorship contract. The only Castrol they use is 10W-60 for other M cars (not F10 M5).

when I signed the paperworks, one of the pages mentioned about engine oil being used at dealership is 5w-30. That's a good because getting them will be much easier and probably cheaper than 10w60 used in the M3 I had before. (dealers charge $23/1L for the 10w60)

Thanks for posting this. What do you think of running German Castrol 0W-30 in Miami?

Has anyone ever used AMSOIL? I've read good reviews but would be interested in thoughts on their product.
