Post BMW Issuing Recall For BMW M5 and M6 Over Fractured Driveshafts

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW Issues Recall For BMW M5 and M6 Over Fractured Driveshafts
35
COMMENTS

BMW is recalling 956 units of BMW M5 and M6 from the 2015 model year. This includes all M6 variants (coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe) - see official notice.

The problem stems from potential fracturing of the driveshaft, which according to the notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Administration, "may have been inadequately welded during manufacturing."

Owners of affected M5 or M6 will be contacted by BMW starting September 6.

The NHTSA notice reads as follows:

RECALL Subject : Inadequately Welded Driveshaft may Fracture

Report Receipt Date: JUL 19, 2016
NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V540000
Component(s): POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected: 956

Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC

SUMMARY:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW M5 sedans manufactured September 4, 2014, through December 4, 2014, 2015 M6 coupes manufactured September 3, 2014, through December 3, 2014, 2015 M6 convertibles manufactured September 8, 2014, through December 4, 2014, and 2015 M6 Gran Coupe vehicles manufactured September3, 2014, through December 4, 2014. The affected vehicles have a driveshaft that may have been inadequately welded during manufacturing.

CONSEQUENCE:
Due to the improper weld, the driveshaft may fracture and fail, causing loss of drive to the rear wheels and a loss of propulsion. Additionally, if the car is turned off and exited without the parking brake applied, the car may roll. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the driveshaft, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on September 6, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Diagnosis: Inadequacy related to drive shaft matters... If you know what I mean.

Is this the same issue that has been reported for the 2017 M4s or is that a separate problem?

Just wondering how you came to the conclusion that you're "likely impacted"?

956 units of 4 different car variant types over those times is not many cars at all compared to those produced

I would say your probability is just the same as everyone else who got called out in that generic MY 15 bracket...

Edit: really not trying to be offensive here just trying to get some understanding as these recalls tend to stir up a lot of BMW drama and everyone immediately believes their car is broken.

According to BMW no. The current M2/3/4/5/6 issue is a "noise" issue after ~10k miles and has no safety impact on the car, at least that is what they say. This M5/6 recall sounds a little more serious.

So to boil this down. Those owners will likely get new driveshafts before those of us get new airbags. Thanks bmw. I've been driving a car with a defective airbag for years now and still no notice of replacement availability.

Thanks for the helpful reply. Just making a worse case assumption with the info given.

And WHO made the defective airbag ?

And WHO is making the replacement airbag ?

You might want to redirect your anger towards the correct vendor ...:

After fuel pump issues presented themselves on my 15 M4, I promptly got rid of it for another German brand. So far, the little monster is fantastic, no recalls, no bs to deal with.
